Description
1959 Sandy Koufax Eighteen Strikeout Game Used Baseball with Original Photograph. He pitched four no-hitters, including a perfect game in 1963, but many historians believe that the greatest performance of the legendary southpaw's career came on August 31, 1959 in a record-tying show of dominance against Mays, McCovey and the rest of the San Francisco Giants at Chavez Ravine. Each of the Hall of Fame Willies was fanned twice in the five to two Dodgers victory, accounting for four of Koufax' eighteen K's, matching the Major League record set by fellow pitching icon Bob Feller. It set a new Senior Circuit mark that Koufax would tie in 1962 but would remain unsurpassed until a nineteen strikeout performance by Steve Carlton in 1969.A beaming Koufax poses with the presented game used sphere in the included original Schworck photograph he snapped for UPI (7x9"). Also included is a clipping of that photo in the newspaper under the appropriate headline, "Heroic Hurler." The ball perfectly matches the one gripped by the three-time Cy Young winner but for later additions of Koufax' signature directly below and teammate Wally Moon on an adjacent panel. One of the most exciting and flawlessly documented Koufax relics to surface in recent memory. Letter of provenance from Bruce Schworck. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
The Ernie Schworck Collection
With a camera around his neck and a spirit of adventure in his heart, renowned photographer Ernie Schworck spent three decades in the employment of United Press International (UPI), aiming his lens at the most famous figures of twentieth century sport and politics. The collection that follows focuses primarily on the former, Schworck's Los Angeles residency making him a familiar face at Dodger Stadium and Anaheim Stadium. He's best remembered for his creation of some of the most famous photographs of legendary southpaw Sandy Koufax ever captured, images that he populated with hand-notated game used balls that served as living captions for no-hitters, World Series victories and other historic achievements. Schworck wisely retained many of these baseballs for his personal collection, and they make their hobby debut in the lots that follow. Several are accompanied by the photos for which they were created, and all include a letter of provenance from the Schworck family.
