1958 Ted Williams Career Home Run #462 Baseball. Widely considered the greatest hitter that ever lived, Ted Williams earned a key to the 500 Home Run Clubhouse despite sacrificing all or part of five seasons to military duty. When not serving Uncle Sam, Williams claimed six American League batting titles and topped the Junior Circuit four times for long balls. However, despite that prolific slugging prowess, only a tiny handful of home run baseballs have survived to tempt the advanced collector. Here we aim to make one of their dreams come true.

The offered OAL (Harridge) ball was launched over the outfield wall of Briggs Stadium on May 27, 1958, just a few months before The Kid turned forty years old. The blast in the top of the fourth inning to victimize Tigers right-hander Paul Foytack was the sixth of the season and the 462nd of Williams' Hall of Fame career, knotting the game at a run each. The Tigers would ultimately earn a three-to-two victory over the visiting Red Sox.

As legend would have it, Williams' home run clout was retrieved by a Tigers scout and alcohol enthusiast who often frequented a tavern just a few blocks from Briggs. The scout had presented the ball to Williams for signing and notating, and later offered the ball to Albert Forintos, the owner of "Pudgy's Bar," in the form of payment for his tab.

And there it remained for years, set into an opaque cup that displayed the autograph above the rim but not the notation that held the secret to the ball's unique significance. Thus exposure to the elements have faded the sweet spot signature to a shadow of its former self while leaving the notation reading, "6th Home Run 1958" in like-new condition.

The ball will be accompanied by a letter of provenance from our consignor, who purchased the ball from Mr. Forintos approximately thirty years after the ball first took up residence in his bar. It is the very first Ted Williams home run baseball that Heritage has had the opportunity to offer. Letter of provenance from consignor. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
