Description

1956 Pee Wee Reese Signed 2,000th Career Hit Baseball. The reigning World Champions were visiting the Cardinals at St. Louis' Sportsman's Park on July 21, 1956 when the most beloved Dodger of them all reached his impressive milestone, and his handwritten commentary upon the ONL (Giles) ball perfectly captures the playful, wide-eyed optimism that epitomized the Brooklyn Dodgers:

"My 2000 Hit - Against St. Louis - First Pitch - A Knuckle Ball Off Murray Dickson - We got beat. I Hope the Next 2000 Are Easier - Pee Wee."

Of course Reese would never get close to doubling that tally, retiring at the end of the Bums' first season in Los Angeles with a final count of 2,170 hits and a gradually swelling chorus of voices calling for his induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame, which would finally reach receptive ears in 1984. Certainly this ball would be well suited to display in that hallowed museum, but it is instead destined for a more private life in the personal collection of a client of Heritage Auctions. The ball exhibits fine game use and a light coating of shellac, preserving all writing at 9/10 strength. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
