Description

1955 Dwight D. Eisenhower Single Signed Baseball. A fine sportsman in his younger days, Ike's own athletic career was brought to a quick close during his tenure upon the Army football team when his leg was badly broken trying to take down future Hall of Famer Jim Thorpe of the Carlisle Indian School. He played the role of spectator, and quite possibly in the capacity of first-pitch thrower at a Washington Senators season opener, the day he applied his stunningly bold black fountain pen ink signature across the side panel and sweet spot of this OAL (Harridge) ball. The date of "May 1955" penned in the same black ink was likely applied by another hand. Scattered surface wear is apparent throughout, but the panel holding the important Presidential signature remains largely unaffected. Almost certainly the finest Ike single in the hobby today. LOA from PSA/DNA (Graded 5.5: autograph 7, ball 4).
