    Description

1949 Brooklyn Dodgers Team Signed Baseball with President Hoover, Ty Cobb. Our research on this special ball strongly suggests the opening game of the 1949 World Series as the likely derivation, the only Dodgers event we have been able to locate featuring the appearance of President Hoover and legendary Hall of Famer Ty Cobb in the stands. Their presence together on a baseball including racial pioneers Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe is particularly compelling. Hoover was a staunch segregationist, but Cobb was a rarity among whites of the Deep South of this era, telling a journalist in 1952, "Certainly it is O.K. for them to play. I see no reason in the world why we shouldn't compete with colored athletes as long as they conduct themselves with politeness and gentility."

The ONL (Frick) ball finds the President and the Georgia Peach on the sweet spot and southern panel respectively, joined by thirty-one Dodgers including Robinson, Campanella, Reese, Snider (clubhouse), Hodges, Newcombe, Branca, Furillo, Hermanski, Stock (clubhouuse) and more. Signatures average 7/10 to 8/10 beneath a light, vintage coating of shellac. A thrilling artifact of a particularly consequential age in baseball and American sociology at large.
