    Description

    1949-51 Jim Thorpe Signed Baseball.
Many consider him the greatest athlete of the twentieth century, an Olympic Gold Medalist, Pro Football Hall of Famer, and member of two New York Giants National League Championship baseball teams. But despite his enormous fame and ability, Thorpe remains a great challenge to modern autograph collectors, due in large part to the troubled existence that awaited him after his natural athletic gifts were sapped by the unforgiving passage of time. This is one of the few surviving signed baseballs from the accomplished athlete. The offered ONL (Frick) was issued between 1949-51 and we are safe in assuming that is when it was signed. Thorpe's side panel signature rates 9/10 and there is a heavy top coating applied to preserve the autograph. A minor surface chip is noticeable on the "Th" in Thorpe's last name. SGC's letter explains: "There are unexplained abrasions on the ball that suggest possible removals." The PSA/DNA full letter states: "There is evidence of signature and/or personalization on the north panel." Overall, one of the finest of the few Thorpe signed baseballs we have encountered. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from SGC.
