A stunning representation from the Babe's last year

1948 Babe Ruth Single Signed Baseball, PSA/DNA NM-MT 8. There are several components that must fall into place to create a world class Babe Ruth single. First, of course, is the signature itself. It must be rendered in the boldest ink, and unmolested by stains or wear. It should be centered on the sweet spot of the baseball, and lacking personalized inscriptions. The baseball itself should likewise be free of defects that detract from the visual appeal of the autograph, and should most desirably be of Official American League origin. Each and every one of these traits conspire here to result in one of the most stunning Ruth singles to be offered this auction season.

We can trace the history of this important keepsake to the difficult final year of Ruth's life by the OAL (Harridge) stamping format, identified in Brandon Grunbaum's essential reference "History of the Baseball" as a three-season style (1948-50). Despite his rapidly failing health, the Babe remained a brave advocate for youth baseball during this time, making his final public appearance only a few weeks before his terminal cancer achieved its cruel objective.

The ball has been professionally graded by the strict experts at PSA/DNA, who assign an 8/10 rating for the signature and a 7/10 for the ball itself, adding a half-point to the calculation for aesthetic strength to conclude at the composite grade.
