Description

Signed for ten-year old star female ballplayer who posed as a boy to compete!

1947 Babe Ruth & Chief Bender Dual-Signed Baseball, PSA/DNA Mint 9 Auto - With Newspaper Photographic Documentation! An included letter of provenance from our consignor proudly tells the tale of his younger sister who thrived in the boys' Philadelphia Police Junior Athletic League and played the hero at Shibe Park in the city's first championship game in 1947. Excerpted:

"I do not remember much of the championship game, but it was a close one and Ron either scored the winning run or drove it in. I think it was the latter. The Babe wanted to meet with and shake the hand of the hero of the game...Ronnie Meehan. As she approached the Babe, she extended her hand and removed her hat. With that, her braids fell onto her shoulders. The Babe looked shocked, he was dumbfounded, as others were around them. But Babe was delighted. They chatted for a while and Babe couldn't help from chuckling. A 10 year old girl was the MVP! With his compliments, he presented her with an autographed ball, and Ron advised Babe that her brother played first and had the nerve to ask for another autographed ball. Still chuckling, Babe did just that."

An included original 8x10" photograph finds the young hero holding one of the baseballs while Ruth signs the other, and a Philadelphia Evening Bulletin newspaper clipping featured another photo of the meeting captioned, "We Right Fielders Have to Be Pals." At Ruth's left shoulder is fellow Hall of Fame legend Chief Bender, a local celebrity for his service to Connie Mack's first great Philadelphia Athletics dynasty in the opening years of the twentieth century.

John Meehan's letter laments that he lost the ball his sister had acquired for him, but he inherited hers upon her passing, and that is the one proudly on offer here. Ruth's sweet spot signature is as bold as the day of its application, as is Bender's autograph to the north, each benefiting from a careful application of shellac. Ball is an ONL (Frick) model which appears to have been used in the contest. A heartwarming and inspiring memento of a tale that yet again identifies Babe Ruth as the thoroughly kind and decent man that we all know him to have been. Notarized letter of provenance from brother of original recipient. Full LOA from PSA/DNA, Mint 9 Auto. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
