    PSA/DNA experts: "The only Ruth/Root dual-signed item we've seen"

1947 Babe Ruth & Charlie Root Dual-Signed Baseball. In the grainy film footage, the Babe's arm is clearly extended, but where was he pointing? Several witnesses to the event swear by the tale's veracity, including United States Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, who was a twelve-year old attending the game with his father on October 1, 1932. "Ruth did point to the center-field scoreboard. And he did hit the ball out of the park after he pointed. So it really happened."

Teammate Lou Gehrig weighed in as well, telling reporters, "What do you think of the nerve of that big monkey? Imagine the guy calling his shot and getting away with it." But Babe Herman recounted a conversation between Ruth and his victim, Chicago Cubs pitcher Charlie Root, on the set of the famous Lou Gehrig biopic "The Pride of the Yankees."

Root: "You never pointed out to center field before you hit that ball of me, did you?"

Ruth: "I know I didn't, but it made a hell of a story, didn't it?"

Absolutely it did. The fact that the tale will always occupy ground somewhere in that hazy realm between fact and fiction seems particularly apt when considering that Babe Ruth was living folklore himself, a Paul Bunyan figure that lived and breathed and walked among us. Of his 729 home runs in Major League competition, the sum of his regular and postseason tallies, the "Called Shot" remains the most famous of them all, and this "Worth Official League" sphere commemorates that Wrigley Field four-bagger with an 8/10 sweet spot signature from the author and a 10/10 autograph from the victim. The ball itself is lightly and evenly toned with minimal surface wear.

When this item was first sold in 2004 it was reported that the signatures were acquired by a resident of Billings, Montana, where Root coached the local Pioneer League baseball team and Ruth appeared in 1947 in support of American Legion Baseball. The experts at PSA/DNA tell us they've never seen Ruth and Root alone together on any item. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
