When we think of Yankee greats exhibiting extraordinary courage and determination in the face of death, it's usually Lou Gehrig whose name springs to mind, and for good reason. But we should remember that his hard-slugging counterpart Babe Ruth walked his own painful last miles with his head held high, and his heart still set upon a lifelong mission of goodwill through our national pastime. In his penultimate appearance at Yankee Stadium on April 27, 1947, the Babe fought back tears and the agony of his terminal throat cancer to remind his packed House that, "The only real game in the world, I think, is baseball."
While we cannot be certain of the occasion that birthed the beautiful single presented here, this OAL (Harridge) format is the style he autographed that day, used throughout the Junior Circuit during the last full baseball season of Ruth's life. Its surface has taken on a creamy vanilla shade over the passage of decades, and the sweet spot signature remains nearly as bold as the date of its application, an 8/10 blue ink stunner. The ball itself earns a 6/10 rating for the composite grade as listed in our lot title.
The vast majority of collectors who have owned a Ruth single of this quality for any reasonable period of time have effectively been paid for the privilege, as the pricing trend has risen at a steady and unbroken pace for as long as most of us have been engaged in this hobby.
