1944 World Series Game Five Last Out Baseball from The Mort Cooper Collection. It was the only Fall Classic in history contested entirely within the City of St. Louis, pitting the always-dangerous Cardinals against the perennial cellar-dwelling Browns. On October 8, 1944, Mort Cooper produced one of the great pitching masterpieces of World Series play, striking out a dozen, including all three Cardinals in the bottom of the ninth, to win a complete-game shutout.

Browns pinch hitter Mike Chartak was Cooper's final victim, and this is the OAL (Harridge) ball with which he fanned him to move to within a single game of the Cardinals' eventual World Championship realization. The ball exhibits solid game wear and is autographed by Cooper in bold blue ink on the sweet spot. The adjacent western and eastern panels are notated in his hand: "Last Ball of 5th World Series Game, Oct. 8th, 1944," and "St. Louis Cards 2-6-1, St. Louis Browns 0-7-1." The ball is consigned by the Cooper family directly. Letter of provenance from son of Mort Cooper. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
