1944 Connie Mack Day Multi-Signed Baseball with Ruth, Wagner, Johnson. It was a sweltering evening at Philadelphia's Shibe Park as the greatest figures in the sport turned out to mark the Golden Anniversary of Connie Mack's first game as a Major League manager, having taken the reins of the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 4, 1894. A city-wide transit strike and the possibility of blackout due to the omnipresent threat of a WWII air raid failed to derail the festivities, which began with an Abbott and Costello performance of their famous "Who's on First?" sketch and proceeded onward through a highlight film of Mack's many achievements. At the culmination of the ceremony, Mack took the microphone himself to name his all-time All-Star team of living players, who lined up next to him as he called their names. First base: George Sisler. Second base: Eddie Collins. Third base: Frank "Home Run" Baker. Shortstop: Honus Wagner. Catcher: Tie between Bill Dickey and Mickey Cochrane. Outfielders: Tris Speaker, Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth. Pitchers: Walter Johnson and Lefty Grove. Unfortunately Cochrane's military service kept him from attending, and Cobb was not present for unspecified reasons, but the rest of these legends, and Mack himself, appear on the presented sphere, one that appears to have been used in the evening's contest between the A's and Yankees prior to signing.
The ten autographs range from 8/10 to 9+/10, a small, dark blotch over part of the Sisler autograph the only issue of any real distraction. It's certainly one of the finest assemblies of pre-war autographs we've ever encountered on a single sphere, an absolute treasure of the sport. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
