Description

The only known example!

1943-45 Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx & Ted Williams Signed Baseball. Extraordinary trio is the first of its kind we've encountered on horsehide, almost certainly dating to the famous meeting between The Babe and The Kid at Fenway on July 12, 1943, a special event to benefit under-privileged children, a cause near and dear to Ruth's heart.

"It mattered little that once the mighty Bambino failed to turn back the clock and keep pace with his youthful opponent, Boston's Ted Williams," the next day's paper reported. "The combination of Father Time and elongated Ted's terrific bat proved too much for the gallant and courageous Ruth, who tried in vain to please his hordes of predominantly youthful admirers."

While a handful of baseballs signed by the pair that day have surfaced on the hobby's auction block, the addition of Jimmie Foxx amplifies the appeal dramatically. Of players whose Big League careers began prior to the Second World War, these are the top three home run producers.

The stamping format of the OAL (Harridge) ball provides for our lot title, a period during which Foxx played his final 104 games, sitting out the 1943 season entirely. Was Foxx visiting Fenway that day? We cannot be sure. But one early autograph collector was smart enough to see a perfect theme, long before such trends became commonplace in baseball autograph collecting. Certainly there is an undeniable Red Sox greats theme here as well, though the Babe wore pinstripes for his meeting with Williams.

True to form, Ruth claims the sweet spot, his black fountain pen ink registering at an impressive 8/10. Foxx is a couple shades lighter at 6/10 on a side panel, while Williams splits the difference at 7/10 on his own. No other writing appears on the ball. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
