Description
A splendid example of one of the rarest singles in the hobby
1940's Hugh Duffy Single Signed Baseball. A late-onset horsehide allergy, perhaps? Honestly, it's a mystery why the surviving population of Duffy singles compares to those of dinosaurs and Dodo birds, as autographed index cards and government postcards from the later years of Duffy's life emerge within the collecting hobby with some degree of regularity. But our research finds just one other single signed baseball within the vast records of twenty-first century auction results, a head-scratcher that many an advanced collector has anxiously considered. While a beauty contest between two entrantsis admittedly not much of a contest at all, we're proud to report that the presented example wins handily over the aforementioned specimen, the side panel autograph, underscored with a descriptive "Red Sox," applied with impressive 9/10 strength. A small scuff barely intersects Duffy's given name, but the ball is otherwise relatively untouched by the hands of time but for a smooth and attractive vintage patina.
Essentially every known Duffy autograph dates to the 1945 Hall of Fame inductee's three decades of service as a scout for Boston, as this Official National League (Frick) ball clearly does, and it was in Boston that he posted what is arguably the greatest offensive season in the game's history. As a member of the 1894 Beaneaters, Duffy notched the highest single-season batting average ever recorded in the Majors, a staggering .440 mark to punctuate a Triple Crown masterpiece (18 home runs, 145 runs batted in). Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
