Description

1938 St. Louis Cardinals Spring Training Team Signed Baseball with Sammy Baugh.

UPDATE: Please note the text has been corrected to indicate this ball dates to 1938 spring training.

As a collegian, Sammy Baugh starred on both the gridiron and diamond, and it may surprise some to learn that his nickname Slingin' Sammy Baugh came from his frozen rope throws from the hot corner, not the pocket. After graduating from TCU, he signed with both the Washington Redskins of the NFL and the St. Louis Cardinals of MLB. In 1937, he quarterbacked the Skins to the the NFL title. Then in 1938, he attended spring training with the Cards and played fifty-three games for two of St. Louis' minor league affiliates before making football a full-time endeavor.

The ball presented here dates from the Cardinals' Spring Training in 1938. Official American Association (George Trautman) sphere is signed by sixteen, including Hall of Famers Sammy Baugh and Joe Medwick sharing the sweet spot, Johnny Mize, Frankie Frisch, Enos Slaughter and Dizzy Dean. Others of note include Pepper Martin, Mickey Owen, Bill McGee, Buster Adams, Stu Martin, Bob Weiland, Don Padgett, Dick Siebert, Don Gutteridge and one other.

The ball has aged to a light gray color with very mild toning. Meanwhile, the black steel-tip fountain pen autographs grade an overall 6/10 in strength. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
