    Description

1938 Johnny Vander Meer Second Consecutive No-Hitter Game Used Baseball. You think Joe DiMaggio's hit streak is untouchable? That's a simple task compared to the most remarkable back-to-back pitching starts in baseball history. On June 11, 1938, Vander Meer denied a single hit to the Boston Bees at Crosley Field. In his next start four days later, he repeated the feat against the Brooklyn Dodgers, an accomplishment which just happened to come in the first night game ever played at Ebbets Field. In recognition of this double no-hit achievement, Reds management pressured Vander Meer to change his uniform number to "00," but the young pitcher declined.

Presented is the only known game ball from that historic second contest, historic both for Vander Meer's unprecedented pitching brilliance and for the late Brooklyn hour of its completion. It derives from the collection of the game's first base umpire George Barr, a collector of historic baseballs, whose vintage handwriting on the side panel reads, "This ball used in game Vander Meer set Worlds Record. 2nd no hit game. Brooklyn vs. Cincinnati." Ink rates 7/10. Barr's autograph is barely legible on the panel below. ONL (Frick) exhibits solid game use. Also included is a Type 1 new photo, complete with paper caption on verso, of the event.
