1934 Lefty O'Doul Near Miss of Home Run Baseball. April will mark a half century since the fabled Polo Grounds succumbed to the wrecking ball, but this intriguing relic survives. A fan's notation on the deeply toned sphere tells the tale: "Polo Ground, Sept. 16, 1934, Home Run Fowl (sic) by Inches, By Lefty O'Doul of the Giant, A crowd of 62,500, Fowl by inches, Right field stand." Ball is deeply toned and has shed its stamping, presumably ONL (Heydler) format. The Giants dropped both halves of a doubleheader this date against the eventual World Champion St. Louis Cardinals, famously dubbed "The Gashouse Gang."
