1932 Lewis "Hack" Wilson Home Run Baseball. While home run baseballs from Hall of Fame luminaries from Frank Baker to Babe Ruth to Mickey Mantle have surfaced in the hobby in recent years, we cannot recall a single such offering from the career of elite slugger Hack Wilson until now. The ONL (Heydler) ball was discovered at a New York City flea market, where it was being sold simply as an old baseball with unidentified autographs. Although these signatures, clearly applied many years after the ball was manufactured, remain unidentified, our consignor spotted an intriguing faded notation in ancient ink upon a side panel while inspecting the piece. It read, in pronounced block lettering, "9/3/32 Wilson Bklyn." A bit of research confirmed what he had suspected--the notation referred to a Hack Wilson home run, launched at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field on that date at the expense of another Hall of Fame icon, New York Giants pitcher Carl Hubbell. Though it is clearly impossible to attribute the writing to any particular individual, this form of notation for pre-war home run baseballs is well established, and there is no question but that it was applied many decades ago. While Wilson's home run would knot the score in the seventh inning, the Dodgers would falter in the twelfth and drop to nine games behind the Chicago Cubs, the same margin that would separate them at season's end. But for the millions of Brooklyn Dodgers fans that still keep the torch burning, a beautiful silver lining is offered here.
