1929 Mel Ott Home Run Baseball #35--Career #54, MEARS Authentic. He was just seventeen years old when he made his Major League debut in 1926, but it was three years later that the fresh-faced kid from the suburbs of New Orleans made his first indelible impression upon the sport. Only Babe Ruth and Chuck Klein bested the twenty-year old slugger's home run output during the 1929 season, Ott's forty-two round-trippers leaving even the Iron Horse and Double-X in the dust.

Despite Ott's prolific long ball artistry, no other period-documented home run sphere has sold on the hobby's major auction circuit in the past twenty years. The provided ONL (Heydler) ball stands alone in that regard, the ancient black ink faded but still legible nearly nine decades after it was applied by the lucky Polo Grounds fan who corralled it. That text reads:

    Panel 1: "Homerun by M. Ott #35, Sept. 2nd, 1929, Phil 4, NY 3."

    Panel 2: "Polo Grounds, NY."

Panel 3: "Labor Day, Polo Grounds, NY."

    Panel 4: "Phila 4, N.Y. 3, 12 innings, Hubbell [illegible]"

All details match a Labor Day 1929 contest against the Phillies at the Polo Grounds, with Ott's fellow future Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell taking the rare loss. Ott would continue on to record 457 more home runs before hanging up his deadly Louisville Slugger, becoming just the third man to gain entry to The Club in 1945. If you're looking to build your own comprehensive collection of 500 Home Run Club balls, this may be your only chance to check Master Melvin off the list.

This baseball derives from the only known complete collection of 500 Home Run Club home run baseballs, one of several on offer within this Platinum Night event. LOA from MEARS, Authentic.
