    Description

1929 Babe Ruth Single Signed Baseball. A notarized letter of provenance tells the tale well:

"The authentic autograph of George Herman 'Babe' Ruth on the accompanying Major League baseball was obtained directly from the star of the New York Yankees on the request of my father Emory J. Hager at Yankee Stadium on Sunday 4 August 1929. I was aged 9 years at the time and with my father when the baseball was driven into the stands behind first base and luckily caught by my father. He then went down and onto the field where the Yankee team was at bat with the 'Babe' available to affix his signature to the baseball. When we returned home, my father inscribed the further information on the baseball as to the doubleheader with the Cleveland Indians that Sunday."

We must report that the black and red stitching of the baseball is incorrect for American League baseballs, and the stamping has faded beyond view. Certainly the autograph is authentic, however, and the notations appear to be period. The baseball is a perfect match for National League baseballs of the day, suggesting that either the youngster's recollection was faulty, or the small chance that an ONL ball made it into an American League game for some reason. The former is more likely. Ruth's black fountain pen ink rates 8/10, making this a particularly desirable Ruth single regardless of any potential game used provenance. Notarized letter of provenance from original owner. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
