Description

1924 World Series (Game Six) Game Used & Inscribed Baseball from Muddy Ruel's House. The everyday catcher for the Washington Senators' back-to-back pennant winning teams of 1924-25, Muddy Ruel was once called "the best catcher in either major league" by none other than Connie Mack.

In Game Seven of the 1924 World Series versus the New York Giants, Ruel scored the tying run in the eighth inning, to send the game into extra innings, and then scored the winning run in the twelfth inning, giving the Washington Senators their first and only World Series title.

The OAL (Johnson) sphere on offer here was used in the Senators' clutch win in Game Six, when Tom Zachary outdueled Art Nehf to notch his second win of the series, deadlocking the Fall Classic at three games apiece. It was inscribed by Ruel on a side panel in black fountain pen "Zachary vs. Nehf, Wash. vs. N.Y., Oct-9 '24, 6th Game."

Our consignor's parents purchased Muddy Ruel's home in Cleveland Heights, Ohio in 1951 and discovered a box of autographed baseballs (seven of which are in this auction) in a closet drawer, including this baseball, all of which he has safeguarded since that time. The consignor's letter of provenance (with a copy of the deed to the house) accompanies this lot. Letter of provenance from Michael Barry (with copy of the deed to the house).
