1924 Ed Walsh "Spit Ball King" Signed Baseball. He's one of two twentieth century pitchers to record a forty-win season, and his career 1.82 ERA is the lowest in the full history of the Majors. In the book, "The Glory of Their Times," fellow Hall of Famer Sam Crawford spoke of his battles with the White Sox ace: "Big Ed Walsh. Great big, strong, good-looking fellow. He threw a spitball. I think that ball disintegrated on the way to the plate, and the catcher put it back together again. I swear, when it went past the plate, it was just the spit went by."

Just weeks after making his final appearance in a Major League uniform, as manager of the 1924 Chicago White Sox, Walsh created one of the most unique signed baseballs we've encountered from the prewar era. While special notations are standard operating procedure in the modern hobby, the reference here to his own damp history is extremely rare for the period:

"Nov 15-24, Ed A. Walsh, White Sox, Chicago, Ill, Spit Ball King."

His black fountain pen ink averages 7/10 on the heavily-used baseball of unknown format, as the stamping has faded from view. A second signature, "John Clancy, Chicago White Sox," appears on the opposite panel, a signature that undermines official status as a Walsh single, though the ball easily presents as one. Bud Clancy was a rookie with Walsh's 1924 ChiSox. But for a scuff crossing the first name, this signature likewise rates about 7/10. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
