1922 Tour of Japan Team Signed Baseball - Only Known Example. Baseball is known for its international flavor. The United States helped spread the sport in the 1920's and made trips to Japan every few years. This ONL baseball was signed by participants of the '22 tour which involved top talent of the time. It is also the only surviving example of its kind. Originally, the aged ball was presented as a gift to George "Alfie" Putnam who would later become an owner of the Pacific Coast League's San Francisco Seals. We counted fourteen signatures, many which have suffered from age/exposure. Almost all wrote the team which they played for in the majors. The autographs on the north and east panels have suffered from exposure. Legible signatures average 4/10 to 5/10 with some lesser. "To a real friend George A Putnam with sincerest compliments" is written on the sweet spot. Autographs include: Amos Strunk, George Kelly, Luke Sewell (reduced), Herb Hunter, Bib Falk, Bert Griffith, Casey Stengel (2/10), Fred Hofmann, Irish Meusel, Riggs Stephenson, Waite Hoyt, John Lavan, Herb Pennock (first name nearly undecipherable) and Joe Bush.
