    Description
1919 World Series Game Used Baseball. Monumentally important orb saw active duty during the most historically significant October in professional baseball history. Deriving from a Midwestern estate, this is believed to be the only game used baseball from the "Black Sox" series ever made available to the public. One can't help but wonder if this ball is one that conspiring pitcher Lefty Williams grooved over the heart of the plate, or that "Shoeless Joe" Jackson allowed to drop in for a hit when his colossal speed might have earned him a catch. The OAL (Johnson) stamping suggests use at Comiskey, where a packed stadium of fans suffered, wondering what had happened to their boys. While the vintage ink has aged considerably since its application over eight and a half decades ago, it remains largely legible, and ably tells the tale. To the left of the OAL stamping reads, "World's Series of 1919." Below the stamping is "Between Chicago Americans and Cincinnati Nationals." Above the stamping: "Won - Lost, Cin 5 - 3, Chic. 3 - 5." This last panel certainly reflects the final tally of games, with Cincinnati winning five to Chicago's three, and suggests the strong possibility that this ball saw action in that final and deciding eighth game. The ball remains solid and tightly stitched in contrasting red and blue, with obvious wear over time but nothing that can diminish the incredible historical appeal. Skeptics can be assured that the ink is unquestionably decades old, and the model of baseball is correct for that Series. Relics such as these were not faked decades ago, and there is no possibility that this is a modern incarnation. Game used baseball collectors should realize that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and bid accordingly.Auction Info
