Description
1919 Cleveland Indians Team Signed Baseball with Ray Chapman. Though a rock-solid member of the Indians infield for nine seasons, shortstop Ray Chapman's tragic claim to baseball fame is his status as the second player ever killed in Major League competition. The victim of a Carl Mays beanball, Chapman fell on August 16, 1920 at the Polo Grounds in uptown Manhattan, just a year after this exceedingly rare OAL (Johnson) ball was autographed. Needless to say, Chapman's autograph is available in very limited supply, and his 6.5/10 offering at the top of the western panel is the finest we've yet encountered on a baseball. He is joined by twenty-eight teammates from the 1919 American League runners-up, notably Speaker (4/10), Coveleski (7/10), Wambsganss (1.5/10), O'Neill (8/10), Johnston (7/10), Bagby (9/10) and more. Signature quality covers the full range noted above, but the vast majority are on the upper end of that scale. A thrilling rarity that should be a compelling target for the advanced collector. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.Auction Info
