Description

Passed down through the family of A.G. Spalding!

1919-24 "Babe" Ruth Single Signed Baseball, PSA/DNA NM+ 7.5. We have Brandon Grunbaum's essential volume, "History of the Baseball: Official National League Baseball Guide" to thank for the date range in our lot title, as the specific design of the "Spalding" circular logo on this ONL (Heydler) sphere existed together with the printed "1909" patent date just above it only during this period that saw the game's greatest figure shift the balance of Major League power from Boston to New York City. There's a strong reason to believe that this ball derives from Ruth's days at Fenway as the included letter of provenance from our consignor explains that his grandfather had been mayor of Brockton, Massachusetts and a Massachusetts state senator. The letter goes on to reveal that his grandfather was a nephew of Albert Spalding, the Hall of Fame baseball pioneer and founder of the eponymous sporting goods brand.

While Ruth's famous generosity as a signer disallows the characterization of his single signed baseballs as "rare" in a general sense, that adjective is more than appropriate for those dating to the first decade of his Major League service. Smaller in format and bearing quotation marks around his legendary nickname, the sweet spot autograph is simple to distinguish from his far more commonly available models that date from the late 1920's and beyond. This heightened rarity will always draw the most avid and discerning of Ruth collectors.

But rarity is far from the only attractive trait apparent here, as both the autograph and the baseball itself have been assessed at a 7/10 level by the tough graders at PSA/DNA, who add a half-point for the superior eye appeal to arrive at the final rating as listed. That combination of early vintage and elite quality places this specimen squarely amidst the finest Ruth singles in existence, a foundational piece for the most illustrious of baseball autograph collections. Letter of provenance from consignor. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
