Description

1917 New York Yankees Team Signed Baseball with Ultra-Rare Joe Kelley Autograph. The experts at PSA/DNA tell us they have never encountered Joe Kelley on a baseball other than the one that appears among the thirty-four signers of the presented OAL (Johnson) baseball, providing one advanced Yankees collector with what is very likely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to check this staggeringly rare Hall of Fame name off his or her list. Kelley earned his posthumous 1971 Hall of Fame induction as an outfielder for the dominant Baltimore Orioles teams of the late 19th century, and signed this ball as a forty-six year old scout and coach for the Yanks.

Of course, Kelley is far from the only rarity here, as Dead Ball Era team signed baseballs are scarcely seen. This is just the second Yankees team ball predating the arrival of Babe Ruth that Heritage has offered in the past two decades. Other specific highlights of the ball include "Wild Bill" Donovan, Yankees manager from 1915-17, who perished in a train crash in 1923, and Duke Farrell, another Yankees coach and a member of the 1903 Boston Red Sox, winners of the first World Series. Farrell was American Association home run champion in 1891 with twelve. He died in 1925 and his autograph is virtually nonexistent.

Other notables: Angel Aragon, Ray Caldwell, Roger Peckinpaugh, Urban Shocker, Wally Pipp, Frank Gilhooley, A.J. "Roxy" Walters, Frank "Home Run" Baker, Bob Shawkey, Duke Farrell, Walt Alexander, Paddy Bauman, Bill Piercy, Fritz Maisel, Ray Fisher, Hugh High, Les Nunamaker, Walter Smallwood, Emer Miller, Sam Ross, Jack Enright, and Ed "Slim" Love. Most of the thirty-four autographs are quite readily legible, averaging perhaps 4/10, with only a handful (none of the listed names) impossible to discern with the naked eye. The ball itself is gorgeous, with the boldest stamping we've ever encountered from the teens or earlier. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services.
