1903 New York Highlanders (Yankees) Team Members Signed Baseball. Babe Ruth was just six years old when the franchise was born not far from his Baltimore home, but two years after the Orioles helped launch the American League in 1901, the team was purchased and relocated to the Big Apple, where it would become the most famous and successful sports franchise in American history.

Certainly Ruth's own arrival in the Big Apple in 1920 helped to establish relics of the Yankees as the most widely available of any Major League club, but only with great rarity do we find pieces celebrating the New York Americans of the rough and tumble Dead Ball Era. Never before have we encountered a baseball bearing multiple signatures of its inaugural edition, and it is our strong suspicion that the offered artifact is entirely unique.

Four members of the 1903 Highlanders, the team that would be officially renamed the Yankees in 1913, have autographed this "Official League Ball," likely shortly before their passing in the 1950's. The autographs appear as follows:

    · Harry Howell, New York Americans, Highlanders, '03.
    · John H. Ganzel, Yankees first Homerun, 5-11-1903.
    · Wm. Wid Conroy (Conroy is written twice, as first try intersects with stitching).
    · Jesse N. Tannehill, NY American League 1903.

Ganzel's elite significance as author of the first home run in the New York history of the franchise is referenced, but we remind bidders that Howell recorded the first pitching victory.

Only Conroy's signature (6/10) dips below the strong average of 8.5/10, further elevating the unique appeal of this celebration of the birth of an American institution. Light toning is of no aesthetic concern. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
