1874 Trophy Baseball from Game Between Rival Fire Departments. Our consignor located this remarkable early relic in an estate sale in the northeastern United States, a town equidistant from the towns of Dover, New Jersey and Dover, Delaware. While the specifics of the event may have been lost over the fourteen decades since the contest was held, the language artfully printed on the golden painted sphere would suggest it had been a friendly battle between rival fire departments. We interpret "H & L" to represent the common fire department terminology of "Hook & Ladder," and the "Hose" terminology of the rival then falls nicely into place. The text:

"Protection H&L No. 1 of Dover vs. Independent Hose No. 1, Score 30 to 17, Oct. 13, 1874."

The ball appears to have been mounted in a display at one point, leaving behind a small hole at the northern pole, and the design features of the ball and the aging of the paint and writing appears precisely correct for the era. An attractive and exciting relic from the earliest days of our National Pastime.
