    Description

1986 Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Plaque Presented to Willie McCovey from The Willie McCovey Collection.

"I'd like to be remembered as the guy who hit the line drive over Bobby Richardson's head." -- Willie McCovey when asked how he would like to be remembered at his Hall of Fame Induction.

He's one of the four faces on the San Francisco Giants' "Mount Rushmore," along with Mays, Marichal and Bonds. But nearly lost in the massive shadow of that larger context is his equal brilliance as both a player and man.

His diamond resume includes two decades of Major League service, which saw him win the Rookie of the Year in 1959, come within three feet of winning the 1962 World Series, team with Mays to form one of history's most fearsome duos, capture the 1969 MVP, and recalibrate to win the 1977 Comeback Player of the Year. When he retired in 1980, he was just the twelfth man to amass 500 home runs, tying with the great Ted Williams at 521, and his eighteen grand slams were tops in senior circuit history.

Off the field, he was the most popular San Francisco Giant in history and a pillar of the Golden Gate City community for more than half a century, devoting countless hours to numerous charitable endeavors. Furthermore, in retirement, he remained an ambassador for both the Giants and the Baseball Hall of Fame, rarely missing the yearly pilgrimage to Cooperstown.

Proudly presented here is the foremost symbol of Willie McCovey's athletic immortality that exists in private hands, the personal edition of his Baseball Hall of Fame plaque, presented to him on August 3, 1986.

It is presented as issued, essentially a high-quality sepia-toned photograph of the original bronze, matted and framed to dimensions of 12.75x10.25". Some scuffs to the frame from handling and storage wear is apparent, but the historic relic presents without any distractions of note. It is unquestionably one of the most significant pieces in The Willie McCovey Collection.

This lot also includes an original photograph (8x10") of Mac receiving the plaque from Peter Ueberroth, with the photographer's sticker on the verso, and a wood plaque (13x16") displaying a montage of images from his induction day, along with his career stats and an inscription plate. Letter of provenance from Willie McCovey's widow.
