A gift from Willie Stargell to Bill Madlock

1979 Pittsburgh Pirates World Series Championship Large Trophy. It was one of the greatest comebacks in World Series history, the Pirates winning three straight elimination games against the Baltimore Orioles to turn a three-games-to-one deficit into World Championship glory. With the Steelers having already won Super Bowl XIII on January 21st, the city of Pittsburgh became just the second city in history (after New York in 1969) to claim both the Lombardi Trophy and the gorgeous style presented here in the same season.

As we have reported before, the twenty-four inch format of the World Series Trophy is considerably rarer than the foot-tall version, which is hardly plentiful either. Typically only a small handful of the large format were produced each year, presented to team owners, managers and a select few VIP's. "Pops" Stargell, an eighteen year veteran of the black and gold at the time of his World Series MVP performance, was properly deemed worthy of the honor and presented with the model we offer here.

Its aesthetics should be familiar to any baseball fan, with a ring of pennants representing all Major League clubs encircling baseball and crown figurals, the former engraved with the glorious "1979" vintage. The press pins for each League Champion are stationed at the base, which is encircled by a golden engraved band announcing, "World Championship Trophy, 1979 - Pittsburgh Pirates." The trophy remains mounted to its red velvet upholstered wooden base and remains housed in its special carrying/storage case. A small degree of tarnishing to the silver baseball figural and wear to the fabric of the base represent the only condition issues worthy of note.

Documentation from Madlock's lawyer and auction text relating to the trophy's original sale in 1995 speaks to the chain of ownership from Stargell to Madlock to the collecting hobby, and is included. Documentation as noted in lot copy.
