    Description

1968-69 Harmon Killebrew Game Worn Minnesota Twins Jersey, MEARS A8. "No individual has ever meant more to the Minnesota Twins organization and millions of fans across Twins territory than Harmon Killebrew," Twins president Dave St. Peter declared in his 2011 eulogy of the fallen slugger. The statement was not the least bit controversial. For twenty-one seasons and 2,329 games, Killebrew had served the franchise with honor, leaving Minnesota after the 1974 season owning the team record for appearances, home runs, runs batted in and total bases, each still standing to this day.

So for the legions of Twins faithful, it doesn't get any better than game worn flannel from the beloved Killer. Here we present a fine example thereof. It derives from Killebrew's eighth All-Star season, and with the National League playing host at Houston's Astrodome, it's entirely possible that this was the jersey he was wearing that fateful day when every manager's Midsummer Classic nightmare came true. In the meaningless exhibition, Killebrew lost his footing stretching for a throw from shortstop Jim Fregosi, rupturing his left medial hamstring. The injury was considered career-threatening, but Killebrew returned after six weeks to limited September action.

A scripted "Twins" spans the chest of the jersey in navy and red tackle twill, with the since-retired number "3" similarly affixed to verso. Left sleeve holds the team logo patch, with a 1969 Centennial patch at right. The experts at MEARS suggest that this Centennial patch had been on the left sleeve, as a faint stitching pattern indicates, supporting the theory that Killebrew wore this jersey in both 1968 and 1969. This team-instituted modification is the sole change to an otherwise 100% original and unaltered garment. An embroidered "Killebrew" remains at interior collar on a sweat-stained felt swatch. Lower left front tail is embroidered, "Killebrew 3, 44, 68" above "Spalding [size] 44" labeling and a washing instructions tag anchoring a "Set 1 1968" identifier.

A few loose stitches appear at shoulder, but otherwise the jersey presents without distraction, a marvelous tribute to one of the great talents and gentlemen of the sport. LOA from Heritage Auctions. LOA from MEARS, A8.
