    Description

1965-68 Willie Mays Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 9. The start of the four-year production range of this Hillerich & Bradsby block-letter S2 found the Say Hey Kid engaged in the finest season of his storied career, his fifty-two long balls earning him the National League home run crown for the second consecutive season, and besting his own personal record set a decade earlier (51). Add League-topping tallies in slugging (.645) and total bases (360), and it's little surprise that the Giants legend found MVP hardware awaiting him at the finish line.

The experts at PSA/DNA assess game use as "outstanding," referencing plentiful ball marks, deep stitch impressions, cleat divots and pine tar on the uncracked handle. Surely a few of Mays' 660 career long balls must have been launched from the bat's punished barrel. The lumber measures just a fraction of an inch short of thirty-five inches (35"), and weighs thirty-two and a half ounces (32.5 oz.), each perfectly matching period factory ordering records.

An included 2006 letter of provenance traces the relic's conversion from weapon of war to collectible back to a Giants road trip to Forbes Field in the mid-1960's. The author's friend had been an acquaintance of Roberto Clemente, and it was the tragic Hall of Famer who introduced the young ladies to his future Hall of Fame counterpart. Mays gave each of the fans a bat as a souvenir. It's one of the finest Mays representations we've offered. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 9. Letter of provenance from original owner.
