National League batting championship, The Sporting News Player of the Year season!

1951 Stan Musial Game Worn & Signed St. Louis Cardinals Uniform, MEARS A8--Photo Matched to 1954 Red Heart Trading Card!
Extraordinarily significant full grey flannel uniform derives from the dazzling prime of one of the greatest players in the history of our national pastime, emerging from the end of a six-season span that saw The Man fail to finish in the top two for National League MVP voting only once. Musial's stat line during this extraordinary age is awash in the bold ink of league supremacy, and while he'd lose out to the great Roy Campanella for the sport's most prestigious individual award in 1951, he'd lead the Senior Circuit in batting average (.355), runs scored (124), triples (12) and total bases (355). The Sporting News, which issued only a single award for the entirety of the Majors until 1969, selected the St. Louis Cardinals legend for the honor of its 1951 Player of the Year.

So it's no overstatement to consider this full uniform one of the most impressive and important post-war ensembles to tempt the advanced collector. The jersey features the classic chenille birds-on-bat logo on the chest, with red and navy felt forming the immortal and long-since retired number "6" on verso. Interior collar holds local St. Louis "Rawlings" label above a size "44" dry cleaning tag. Lower left front tail bears "Musial 51-1" embroidered directly into the jersey body, while left sleeve reveals the rare and desirable National League 75th Anniversary patch. The experts at MEARS suggest that this is an original/period patch, but that it was reapplied post-Musial. Center zipper, almost always damaged or replaced on period gamers, is original and functional here. Lower left chest is signed in 9/10 black sharpie.

Matching pants date to four years later, as a "Set 1 1955" flap tag anchored by the "Rawlings" interior label indicates. Washing instruction and size "36" tagging appears at left and right edge respectively. "Stan Musial" appears upon an embroidered swatch below.

Both garments exhibits heavy game wear, the jersey sporting several large team repairs on verso that do little to distract the eye but nonetheless draw two points from an otherwise perfect MEARS assessment. Pants exhibit an unrepaired hole at right knee and general soiling, but likewise present very well.

The highly-detailed letter of examination from MEARS indicates that this jersey has been matched to a studio photograph of Musial that was subsequently used for his 1954 Red Heart Dog Food baseball card, the last point of intrigue for one of the top uniform offerings of 2018. The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
