1931 Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Signed Photograph, PSA/DNA NM-MT 8. While the Bustin' Babe vs. Larrupin' Lous barnstorming tour of 1927-28 and the 1934 Tour of Japan are well known to even casual fans of the pre-war game, Ruth's 1931 travels as a member of his eponymous "Universal Stars" holds a considerably lower profile in baseball history. Like the late 1920's tours, this one was orchestrated by pioneering sports agent Christy Walsh, fifteen events as the biggest name in the game made his way west to Hollywood to appear in a series of moving picture shorts.

Virtually every surviving photograph of this tour derives from the first stop in West New York, New Jersey, just across the Hudson from Manhattan and thus close enough to Lou Gehrig's home to garner his participation. In all photos from this October 4, 1931 contest, including the offered one-of-a-kind snapshot, the Iron Horse wears his road grey Yankees kit.

While the 3.5x2.5" image is ever so slightly out of focus, the autographs of the legendary subjects are truly spectacular, garnering a combined grade of NM-MT 8 from the experts from PSA/DNA, who assess Ruth at 7/10 and Gehrig at 9/10. A few light wrinkles to the image are only apparent at sharp angles to the light, and some tape on verso, likely from scrapbook presentation, are likewise innocuous. Certainly one of the finest dual-signed photos from this storied slugging tandem that Heritage has been privileged to offer. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, NM-MT 8.

Signature Internet Extended Bid: These Auctions are presented via catalog and online. Bidding is taken through our website or via phone. There are two phases of bidding during this type of auction: 1) Normal bidding: Bids are taken up until 10 PM CT the night the auction closes. 2) 30 Minute Ending: On a lot-by-lot basis, starting at 10:00 PM CT, any person who has bid on the lot previously may continue to bid on that lot until there are no more bids for 30 minutes. For example, if you bid on a lot during Normal Bidding, you could participate during Extended Bidding for that lot, but not on lots you did not bid on previously. If a bid was placed at 10:15, the new end time for that lot would become 10:45. If no other bids were placed before 10:45, the lot would close. If you are the high bidder on a lot, changing your bid will not extend the bidding during the 30 Minute Ending phase (only a bid from another bidder will extend bidding). If you are the only bidder at 10 PM, you will automatically win the lot at 10:30. Important: After normal bidding ends, you must be signed-on to the Heritage site to see the bidding option on lots where you qualify for extended bidding.
