    Description

1929 Philadelphia Athletics World Series Championship Ring Presented to Al Simmons.

    Eighteen games.

How is that even possible, right? How does a New York Yankees team that swept both of the previous two World Series, that enjoyed the services of the two greatest long ball artists baseball had ever seen, finish eighteen games behind the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1929 American League pennant race?

The man who used to own this ring is a big part of that answer, his 157 runs batted in and thirty-four home runs during the 1929 regular season leading all A's, including future 500 Home Run Club member Jimmie Foxx. When the Philadelphia Athletics were at their absolute greatest, it was Al Simmons who served as the face of that dynasty.

But the most famous moment of Simmons' 1929 campaign came in Game Four of their World Series battle with the National League Champion Chicago Cubs. With the Athletics trailing eight to nothing in the bottom of the seventh inning, Simmons led off the frame with a solo home run. Before the third out was recorded, nine more Mack Men would cross the plate, the last scoring of the afternoon in a wildly improbable ten-to-eight Athletics victory. Two days later, Simmons would be doubled home in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game Five for the walk-off World Series Championship clincher.

Presented is one of the most significant pre-war championship rings ever offered at public auction, issued to Simmons for his essential service in that Fall Classic for the ages. Proud wear has dulled the detail of the ring's design, but we can still easily spot the figural elephant and baseball on the ring face, and the "29" underscoring the genuine diamond at center. Interior band is stamped "J.E.C. & Co., 14KT" and engraved "Albert H. Simmon," accidentally botching both the first (Aloysius) and last names. Size ten (10). Weight fifteen grams (15 g.). Consigned to auction directly by the Simmons family. Letter of provenance from Simmons family.
