    Description

1928-30 Babe Ruth Game Used Bat.
Please note that further research has determined that this bat was ordered and almost certainly used during the historic 1927 baseball season in which Babe Ruth established his sixty home run single season record. Please see full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA bat expert John Taube at the bottom of this listing that explains this revelation.

Tipping the scales at just over forty ounces, the presented signature model Hillerich & Bradsby will evoke the spirit of the Babe as soon as you grip the handle and feel the heft of the barrel testing your wrists. It's no mere baseball bat--it's like Paul Bunyan's ax, the stuff of folklore. A full half-pound heavier than the lumber used by Barry Bonds to establish his controversial 2001 single season record, this bat delivers us to that Golden Age of Yankee Stadium's first decade in a way that few other artifacts could muster. Like Ruth himself, and his countless exploits that tread that pinstripe between fact and fiction, it's a relic that's simply larger than life.

One of just a tiny handful of Ruth gamers to garner a perfect rating of GU 10 from both John Taube and Dave Bushing, the presented specimen offers far more than a fidelity to the Babe's preferred specifications to claim top collecting honors. The key Ruth trait of barrel and handle scoring is present here in textbook format, with nine inches of the former and four inches of the latter carefully grooved with a metal instrument. While the benefit of a textured surface at the grip is self evident, the scoring of the barrel is due to the Babe's belief that such alterations would counteract the spin of a pitched ball, delivering more power and distance to his drives. Superstition perhaps, but if power was the goal, there was plenty of proof in Ruth's pudding.

During each of the three years in which this thrilling relic might have seen action, the Babe posted American League-leading totals in home runs and slugging percentage, averaging a stunning fifty long balls a season as he captivated the nation and the world with his almost supernatural abilities. The phenomenal game use, characterized by experts John Taube and Dave Bushing as "Heavy," effectively assures that at least several of Ruth's celebrated round-trippers were launched from its battered barrel. With Ruth abandoning his practice of notching the trademark of his bat to record home runs after accidentally splitting his prized gamer when applying the twenty-first notch in 1927, we'll be left to imagine the exact tally registered by this one, but the apparent weeks of use in evidence here is worth serious consideration. It is also worthy of note that both Taube and Bushing's letters of authenticity suggest that the remnants of a Ruth autograph appear at the handle, but we must admit that we cannot spot it ourselves.

While any Babe Ruth game used bat carries with it great value and historical significance, not all of them are created equal. This is not an example for the bargain hunter, but rather for the discerning collector who understands that quality is always the wisest investment. LOA from PSA/DNA. LOA from MEARS.
