    Description

1927 Ty Cobb Original News Photograph from The Ty Cobb Collection, PSA/DNA Type 1. The "Detroit News" stamping on verso of this image of Cobb in a Philadelphia Athletics uniform is a bit heartbreaking, strongly suggesting that the Motor City was smarting from the loss of its hero. We love the image though, and Cobb still looks sharp with his determined stare and wide-handed grip. The jersey style assigns the vintage, as Cobb played only two seasons in Philly, and wore a different look in 1928. Photo measures 8x10" and has a diagonal crease that runs between the catcher and umpire and a small chip at upper left corner, otherwise no major faults. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Type 1. Letter of provenance from family of Cobb's former teammate.

More Information: The Ty Cobb Collection

Feared by most, but respected by all, Tyrus Raymond Cobb was the Machiavellian ideal of the early game, forging his Cooperstown bronze in the fires of natural ability and gritted teeth determination. Though Cobb’s staggering career hits tally of 4,191 was ultimately eclipsed, many batting records remain in the Georgia Peach’s sole possession to this day, most notably the .366 career batting average. As the number one man in Hall of Fame enshrinement and the sport’s most illustrious metric of offensive greatness, Cobb properly draws enormous attention whenever a significant relic from his life appears upon the auction block, but sadly this is far from a common occurrence.

Certainly the items contained within The Ty Cobb Collection represent the most important "find" related to the Georgia Peach in recent memory. They derive from the family of a fellow native of Cobb’s Royston, Georgia hometown, and a teammate on the local baseball club. As the story goes, Cobb and this man traveled together to Augusta, Georgia to try out for the Augusta A’s. The former made the team, and went on to become the greatest player of his era, while the latter missed the cut and pursued a career in medicine, ultimately opening a hospital in Royston in the mid-1920’s. Though their career paths diverged, their friendship remained solid through the passing decades, and Cobb was even a groomsman at the wedding of his friend’s son in 1949. It was Cobb who escorted the widow of his old friend down the aisle.

It was this close family friendship that made the family the owners of the extraordinary collection of Ty Cobb collectibles that populate the following pages. Each lot will be accompanied by a letter of provenance from the granddaughter of Cobb’s old teammate and close friend.
