1924 World Tour Baseball Signed by Chicago White Sox & New York Giants Teams from Muddy Ruel's House. Touring has been a part of the National Pastime ever since the game's infancy. In 1860, the Excelsior Club of South Brooklyn's "grand excursion" to upstate New York was the first extended trip by a baseball team on record. In 1874, the Boston Red Stockings and Philadelphia Athletics traveled across the pond for the first "World Baseball Tour". There were subsequent international tours in 1888, 1913, 1920, and 1922.

Here, we encounter a relic from the second of Charles Comiskey's two voyages to Europe and beyond, again a pairing of Comiskey's own team and that of his good friend John McGraw. Twenty-two signatures from the ChiSox and Giants adorn this OAL (Johnson) souvenir. Hall of Fame residents include White Sox owner Charles Comiskey, White Sox managers Johnny Evers and Ed Walsh, Giants manager John McGraw, Giants coach Hugh Jennings, Casey Stengel, Frankie Frisch, Sam Rice, and Ted Lyons. Other important names include Irish Meusel, Heine Groh, Art Nehf, Charlie Robertson, Willie Kamm, Bib Falk, Johnny Mostil, Bubber Jonnard, Harry Grabiner (executive), Walter Henline (photographer), David Warfield, and Herbert Hartley (captain of the S.S. Leviathan). Captain Hartley's inclusion indicates that the ball was most probably signed aboard ship.

The ball has understandably toned over the nearly 100 years since it was first created but the bold and brilliant autographs have been preserved nicely, thanks to a fine coat of shellac, and grade an overall 9/10. It should be noted that the Evers is a bit light but still very legible.

Our consignor's parents purchased Muddy Ruel's home in Cleveland Heights, Ohio in 1951 and discovered a box of autographed baseballs (seven of which are in this auction) in a closet drawer, including this baseball, all of which he has safeguarded since that time. The consignor's letter of provenance (with a copy of the deed to the house) accompanies this lot. Letter of provenance from Michael Barry (with copy of the deed to the house). Full LOA from SGC Authentic. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
