The House that Ruth Built opens its doors...

1923 Yankee Stadium Grand Opening Ticket Stub, PSA Authentic. Bronx baseball had begun on virtually that same spot nearly seven decades earlier, a plot of land that the Unions of Morrisania called home, not far from the old Melrose Station of the Harlem Railroad. But that early team had never witnessed a site that could compare to the pageantry of April 18, 1923, when sixty thousand fans packed the newly erected baseball palace just across the river from the Yankees' former Polo Grounds home to watch the first game of what would prove to be the first of twenty-seven franchise World Championship seasons to date.

John Phillip Sousa directed the Seventh Regiment Band as the Yankees and visiting Boston Red Sox took the field, Yankees team owner Jacob Ruppert marching alongside Red Sox owner Harry Frazee, the man from whom he had acquired the sport's greatest star. Babe Ruth famously told reporters before the start of the contest, "I'd give a year of my life if I can hit a home run in the first game in this new park." It was a debt Ruth would have to pay--with interest--dead at fifty-three, a quarter-century after his third inning long ball. The New York Times called the clout a "savage home run that was the real baptism of Yankee Stadium."

Despite a sell-out crowd that left 25,000 locked outside the turnstiles, only a tiny handful of relics from that first contest have survived to present day, and they are coveted as true treasures of Yankee history. One fan lucky enough to attend the Stadium's Grand Opening returned home with the presented stub in his pocket and then glued it into a scrapbook for safe keeping.

The stub's obverse presents nearly flawlessly, reporting the game number and date, thus the more desirable of the available formats (another variation reports the game number alone). The "Canada Dry" advertising on the ticket's verso is largely lost to scrapbook removal but is still identifiable. Certainly this condition issue must be forgiven in light of the tremendous scarcity and desirability. The ticket is housed in a PSA capsule, confirming the elite significance. Encapsulated "Authentic" by PSA.
