    Description

1912 Honus Wagner Large Format Original Photograph with Wagner Family Provenance. If you could only own one Honus Wagner photo, this image would be in the running. Simply put, it is one the finest studio representations of The Dutchman that we've ever encountered. It must have been lauded when it was first printed back in 1913 as well, because Honus chose to hang it in his own home.

Aside from the superb composition, clarity and oversized format, the image brilliantly captures the incredible dichotomy that was Wagner. His posture exudes the calming deference of Lou Gehrig, while his powerful physique and steely glare suggest the strength and confidence of a Vin Diesel character.

Wagner poses on a faux dugout bench, in full uniform, while gently holding his bat in front of him. Additionally, the photographic studio's name and the year the image was produced - "Johnston Studios -13-" - are neatly written in pencil at the lower right. Interestingly, while the 9.75x12.75" original sepia image was printed in 1913, his jersey is a one-year style dating from the 1912 season.

The image displays several inconsequential peripheral flaws which should be noted and include: toning and foxing along the white border areas; small areas of adhesive and/or paper residue from when the image was previously matted and framed; and minor trimming along the borders. However, these distractions do not encroach on the image itself, which is virtually NRMT, and would quickly vanish from view when matted and/or framed.

The 1992 one-page typed signed letter of provenance from Honus Wagner's granddaughter reads: "I verify that this 6x9" sepia photo - Wagner holding bat in dugout, belonged to my grandfather, Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame shortstop, Honus Wagner. Leslie Wagner Blair."

Note: The discrepancy in the dimensions is due to the fact that it was originally sold in a frame and the measurement stated in the letter reflects the visible area of the image at the time. And, in an exciting bit of coincidence, the exact bat Wagner is holding in this photograph is featured in this Platinum Night auction! Letter of provenance from Leslie Wagner Blair.
