    Description

1912 Boston Garter (H813) Advertising Sign. No other issue can boast a higher value per card than the sixteen-card set once distributed in boxes of sock garters almost a century ago. Book values list a common player at $24,000 in NM condition, with the Hall of Famers creeping close to, or beyond, the $30,000 mark. Surely this example of Pirates Hall of Famer Fred Clarke would merit something close to a NM rating if it were not for the fact it is affixed to a cardboard backing that was once a store display sign. Just the lightest hints of foxing speak to the card's advanced age. While the sign itself has been trimmed down to its present shape and size of approximately 7x9", the card remains untouched by the blade and shows none of the wear that appears in mild form at the edges of the cardboard mount. Those unfamiliar with this monumentally scarce issue will surely get a chuckle out of the "locker room with a view" theme, and the sight of the game's greatest players sporting the rather goofy looking product later rendered obsolete by the advent of elastic. Those brave souls who have undertaken the hobby of Boston Garter collecting must certainly understand that the chance to broaden one's collection comes along very rarely, and will jump at this opportunity.
