    Description

1910's Christy Mathewson Single Signed Baseball. Mathewson stands as a defining figure of the sport's Dead Ball Era as much as he stands in contrast to it. In that rough and tumble period of our national pastime, when the sport was populated by brawling drunks and illiterate farmhands, Matty was recognized almost as much for his gentlemanly comportment as he was for his remarkable Hall of Fame abilities. His utter pitching supremacy is evident in his eye-popping record of 373-188--a nearly two-to-one ratio of success--and a career earned run average of just 2.13.

Mathewson's early passing, and the nine and a half decades that have since elapsed, have conspired to deny the collecting hobby of all but a meager few autograph exemplars, particularly on the hide of a baseball. In fact, fewer than ten Matty singles have been offered by major auction houses in the past decade and a half. This specimen rates among the finest of that skimpy bunch, providing a boldly penned side panel signature which survives at a sturdy 8/10. A small degree of surface wear to the surname is noted.

The ball itself is deeply toned and has shed its original stamping over the years, but the black and red stitching suggests strongly that it's an ONL model. Few Hall of Fame singles reveal a wider gulf between supply and demand, so we expect some real fireworks on auction night. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
