    Description

1907 Ty Cobb Original Studio Cabinet Photograph by Carl Horner from The Ty Cobb Collection, PSA/DNA Type 1. As the era's most noteworthy and celebrated baseball photographer, Carl Horner bears the lion's share of responsibility for the manner in which we see the early game in our mind's eye. His simple yet expertly rendered studio portraits of the men populating the Dead Ball game served as the template for much of the tobacco and candy card issues of the day, most notably the image of Honus Wagner that appears upon the most coveted and valuable trading card in the collecting hobby.

This is arguably the second most famous photograph from Horner's world famous oeuvre, an image which, like the aforementioned Wagner, will garner instant recognition from early trading card collectors. The shot is utilized for both the red and green background portrait shots of the fabled T206 set, as well as the W600 (which debuted in October 1907) and M116 Sporting Life issues, the E103 Williams Caramel, and the 1908-09 Rose Company postcards. Certainly this list is not comprehensive.

Though the surface of the image exhibits a degree of soiling commensurate with its advanced age, the razor-sharp focus of the print provides insight into reasons for Horner's favored status across generations of collectors. It's a piece that finds both artist and subject at the peak of his respective capabilities. Intriguingly, pencil writing on verso lists six of the eight American League cities and the names of hotels, which we can only interpret to be those utilized by the Tigers (Detroit and Cleveland are the only cities unlisted), however the handwriting does not appear to be Cobb's.

Various databases suggest that no other Cobb cabinet from Horner has appeared on the hobby's auction block in the twenty-first century, but even if that weren't the case, this particular specimen is greatly elevated by its personal connection to the subject. The image measures 5.75x4", with the Horner mount completing the dimensions at 7x5.25". Letter of provenance from family of Cobb's former teammate. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
