    Description

Very Rare 1924 Oakland Tribune Walter Johnson Tribute Insert Card SGC 50 VG/EX 4. In 1924, the Washington Senators did something they never did before - they won the World Series! The team went 92-62 behind the bats of Joe Judge (.324), Sam Rice (.334) and Goose Goslin (.344). The pitching staff was anchored by the 1924 American League MVP - Walter Johnson. When the dust settled on the '24 season, "The Big Train" was 23-7 on 158 Ks, a 2.72 ERA and a .767 winning percentage and to his credit. Naturally he was the toast of Washington but his fans reached from coast to coast.

The Oakland Tribune gave away this one-color, 3-1/4 x 5-3/4" card the day a banquet has held in Johnson's honor. Considering its one-day release and the fact that Johnson wasn't exactly a local hero, it is almost sheer dumb luck that any of these cards exist at all. With three examples known in private collections, an example hasn't been offered at auction in close to a decade when one sold for over $5,000. It is unquestionably one of the rarest Walter Johnson cards, or any item relating to the 1924 World Series. Surviving at a splendid state of preservation, the card is "EX/MT" save for two very minor areas of dimpling to the fragile thin card stock. Graded SGC 50 VG/EX 4, this is the only example graded by any third party service. For the Walter Johnson specialist, this card elevates your holdings to elite status.
