1959 Fleer Ted Williams 5-cent Wax Box with 24 Unopened 8-card Packs. By the spring of 1959 the Bowman Gum company and the cards they produced were all but happy memories. Topps Gum had a near-complete lock on featuring Major League baseball players and teams on trading cards but in 1959 Fleer Gum hit one out of the park. Ted Williams - one of baseball's greatest superstars and a war hero - was signed on to feature the 1942 and 1947 Triple Crown winner with his own set of cards. It was Ted Williams, Ted Williams and more Ted Williams. Eighty cards in all, circulated in both 6- and 8-card wax packs, both priced at 5-Cents each. The set would follow Williams from his childhood to current times. Most cards featured moments from his baseball career from his rookie debut to his latest batting title in 1958. Other cards depicted Ted with other sports legends like Babe Ruth, Eddie Collins and Jim Thorpe while others showcased key events from his years in the military and with family.

Offered is a rare wax complete box featuring the larger, 8-card packs. We can only guess how many of the 192 individual cards are going to be in MINT or GEM MT condition. We can only speculate if card #68 "Jan 23, 1959 - Ted Signs for 1959" can be found within. History says it should not as the card was not supposed to be sold. And not because of Ted Williams but the man he is pictured with - Bucky Harris, the Red Sox GM who was under contract with Topps. The outer box does have some light color fade but is otherwise in close to near-mint condition. Interior packs are totally un-phased by time. The box has been stowed away for decades and is being brought to auction for the first time. A fantastic find and what a great conversation piece to have in your collection.
