Description
Virgin wax from a Big Three game-changer!
1952 Topps Baseball (1st Series) 5-Cent Unopened Wax Pack GAI
EX-MT+ 6.5. We had won the war and we felt as if there was no
stopping us. America was going big. The ownership at Topps Chewing
Gum felt it--the name itself was an expression of that infectious
confidence. Though the company had dipped its toe into the trading
card waters with its Hopalong Cassidy issue of 1950, Sy
Berger--widely considered "the father of the modern baseball
card"--set about constructing something both unprecedented and
unequivocal the next fall. In both the number of entries and the
dimensions of each individual card, his creation was larger than
any single-year issue to date, an audaciously bold debut. That
creation was 1952 Topps Baseball. Today Berger's masterpiece stands
in an abridged Mount Rushmore of the hobby--just three inhabitants
instead of four--1909-11 T206, 1933 Goudey and the 1952 Topps issue
this lot represents.Graded GAI EX-MT+ 6.5. We offer this "1st Series" unopened 5-cent wax pack from the landmark edition. Colors are striking and glossy. There are small fissures in the bottom two corners, the top left has a small hole opening. That inaugural series focused heavily on the red-hot Big Apple baseball scene--remember that the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees were the top finishers in 1951. Possible contents include a Mint or Gem Mint card featuring Phil Rizzuto, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges or Monte Irvin, as well as fellow Hall of Famers Warren Spahn and Robin Roberts. This is one of the most coveted unopened packs of the modern era.
