Description
1948 Bowman Baseball Wax Pack, PSA NM 7 - One of Four PSA-Graded Examples! Name virtually any trading card that exists and this item has it beat for rarity, as the presented wax pack is one of only four from the 1948 Bowman Baseball issue inhabiting a slab of the hobby's premier grading service. Certainly any veteran client of Heritage Auctions is well aware that the "unopened" subgenre of vintage trading cards is absolutely white-hot at present, with our $3.7 million result for a case of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Hockey in February of last year just one data point in this stampeding bull market.Like the 1952 baseball issue was for Topps, this 1948 set for Bowman is the company's first, so this wax pack's extreme rarity represents just a portion of its appeal. Let's remember that the production of baseball cards had ground to a dead halt soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor due to wartime paper rationing, so 1948 represented an exciting new start for the industry, blessing the hobby with the popular 1948 Leaf issue and this stirring baseball debut from an ascendant Bowman company.
It's been argued that every card in the 1948 Bowman set is a "rookie" as the company's first, but many would consider this characterization as overly generous. Certainly there is no dispute that the following Hall of Famers enjoy rookie stature within the issue: Ralph Kiner #3, Yogi Berra #6, Phil Rizzuto #8, Warren Spahn #18, Stan Musial #36 and Red Schoendienst #38. Clearly the Big Apple was the primary target audience for this debut Bowman set, as twenty-seven of the forty-eight subjects played their home games in New York City. The nickel packs contained five cards--a penny apiece.
Remarkably, each of the four 1948 Bowman Baseball wax packs found in the PSA population share the same grade, and it's a strong one. We should note that just three 1948 Leaf packs appear in the PSA population, and a PSA NM 7 example sold at auction in September 2023 for $200,000. A thrilling and incredibly rare opportunity for the advanced wax collector. Graded PSA NM 7.
