    Description

Unique 1913 - 1914 Sophomore Perfect Clothes Advertising Cards (17). Nothing is more fascinating than a new discovery. This presentation has been in one family for the last century. The cards belonged to the grandfather who was born in 1899, the son of Swedish immigrants. They have been in possession of our consignor since the 1980's, the treasured collection included cards, Spalding almanacs and sporting equipment catalogs. Being of modest means, our consignor noted he was not surprised his grandfather held onto this collection as they must have been the prized possessions of a young boy would have been in his mid-teens. It is from the mid-1910's that we have these advertising cards for "Sophomore Perfect Clothes." We have found absolutely no reference to this brand inside the hobby! That brand had an association with Benjamin Clothes and we have found newspaper ads from southern Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Kansas and Oregon. One ad triumphs "Sophomore Perfect Clothes for young men and older ones (who) prefer because they are different and dignified." A handful offer college football and tennis themes but most are baseball related with a focus on the top teams of the era - the Giants and Athletics - plus the 1913 World Series and 1914 Giants/White Sox world tour. The "Sophomore Perfect Clothes" logo-type is incorporated into each scene. They are of various sizes, the largest cards being 5-1/2" x 4-1/4." The currently unique cards are on thin stock and are generally in VG to EX condition, one has a tear. We have to disregard these as being proofs or prototypes due to the print and card stock quality. We have no reason to believe they were not publicly circulated. Players making appearances are Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Joe Wood, Ed Walsh, Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Johnny Evers and Rube Marquard to name a few. Titles include: Some Stars of the Gridiron for the Season of 1913, A Great Football Picture, The Yale-Harvard Game, A Sensational Slide (Evers), Maurice McLaughlin, American League Baseball Magnates at Their Annual Meeting, Here are the Philadelphia Pace Makers in the National League, New Infield Foundation of Yanks 1914 Team, One Hundred Thousand Dollars Worth of Pitchers, New York Giants, Latest Group of Philadelphia Americans, The Great Pitchers who are Fighting for the World's Championship, Will Battle for World's Championship, The World's Tour of Two Famous Baseball Clubs (1914), Leading Events which Happened in the Battle for the World's Championship, Comiskey's New star outfielder - Larry Chappell - of the White Sox and Conny (Connie) Mack's Three Star Catchers. This is an exciting new find of the only known examples we are aware of!
