    Description

Uncatalogued 1887 N172 Old Judge Orator Shafer "Catching, Hands Chest High" PSA VG-EX+ 4.5. Reference books are an invaluable tool allowing hobbyists to pursue websites, shows and auctions with an educated, enlightened and vigorous passion bolstered by the notion - knowledge is power. For the Old Judge enthusiast no reference book is more comprehensive and well produced as is "The Photographic Baseball cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890)" published in 2008. At over 450 pages, the book offers details on rare subsets like the "Spotted Tie" and "Brown's Champions" cards plus background information on each and every one of the over 500 players who make up the massive N172 Old Judge promotion. Every known pose of every player is presented along with images of thousands of individual cards. Player 409 is George W. Shaffer of Des Moines of the Western Association. His name is spelled "Shafer" on the cards and his unique nickname "Orator" we find out was thanks to the way he encouraged himself up by talking to himself into playing better. This would be something like, "You're a good catcher, you're a good hitter and the fans really like you."

But what we offer here is no ordinary N172 of Shafer. This card is not one of the five poses listed in the 2008 book! It is a sixth and unknown pose identified as "Catch, Hands Chest High" on the PSA label. This pose is not mentioned in any other reference guide as well and is the only confirmed copy on both PSA and SGC census reports. How amazing it is that even after over 120 years, multiple books with detailed checklists or simply solely dedicated to this set that a new N172 was discovered! Considering it has taken 120+ years to make its 2010 auction debut it almost seems unnecessary to mention the card has been graded PSA VG-EX+ 4.5 and displays a nice above average quality image. They say to never say never but what are the odds another may exist?
